When the Spanish conquistadors seized control of the South American nation known as Cuzcatlan in 1524, they renamed it La Provincia de Nuestra Senor Jesus Cristo, ElSalvador del Mundo (The Province of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Saviour of the World).

It was quickly abbreviated to El Salvador. More people die of centipede bites in El Salvador than any other country.
