LULLY, Jean-Baptiste (1632-87)

The composer and conductor Jean-Baptiste Lully became a martyr to music in 1687 when he died after stabbing himself in the foot with a conducting staff at the Paris Opera. The wound turned septic and he died shortly after. Despite this, it was not until the 19th century that the baton became the favoiured implement for conducting.
